Endometriosis: The $10,002 Period Problem

Endometriosis: The $10,002 Period Problem

Endometriosis isn’t just a bad period. It’s a chronic health crisis with real financial consequences that millions of people face. Despite the staggering costs, it remains underfunded, misunderstood, and invisible in mainstream healthcare.

Here’s what you need to know about this $10,002 period problem

Endometriosis is expensive... like, really expensive.

Research by Soliman et al. (2018) found that endometriosis costs an average of $10,002 per year in medical expenses. That’s more than TWICE the cost for people without the condition.

This chronic health crisis has REAL financial consequences like:

  • Higher medical costs: People with endometriosis face additional expenses for surgeries, imaging, and ongoing medications
  • Chronic treatment needs: Persistent symptoms require ongoing treatments that add to the financial strain
  • Delayed diagnosis: On average, it takes 7-10 years to diagnose endometriosis, leading to prolonged suffering and delayed care
  • Job instability: Many people with endometriosis miss work due to pain or need flexible job accommodations, which can result in lost wages
  • Insurance gaps: The high cost of endometriosis care is often compounded by insurance gaps, leaving people to cover large out-of-pocket expenses

The Systemic Failure

Endo is more than pain, it's a systemic problem. The reasons why endometriosis is underfunded are deeply rooted in gender bias, the underestimation of the condition’s impact, and the dismissal of women/AFAB pain. These factors contribute to the lack of funding, research, and awareness needed to properly address this condition.

How You Can Make a Difference

So, what can we actually do to help people with endometriosis? There are several actionable steps we can take to raise awareness and drive change:

  1. Spread the word: Share information about the financial and emotional toll of endometriosis with your community. Every conversation helps increase awareness
  2. Support advocacy organizations: Organizations like Endometriosis Foundation of America, Endo Black, Inc., and Endo March are doing incredible work to fund research and advocate for policy change
  3. Demand better healthcare: Contact your local representatives and urge them to increase funding for endometriosis research and ensure better healthcare coverage for those affected (find your representative, find your senator)
  4. Listen and validate: Those with endo often face skepticism about their pain. Be a source of support and validate their experiences
  5. Support innovation: Companies and non-profits working on innovative treatments for endometriosis need your support. Whether through donations or backing new ideas, your contribution can help drive progress.
